Figure description

Two op-amps, A1 (upper) and A2 (lower), each powered by +V_CC and -V_EE. Source V_in (sinusoidal symbol, lower terminal grounded) feeds a resistor R into a node X. From node X: a feedback resistor R goes to V_out1 (output of A1); a battery V_os is in series between node X and the inverting (-) input of A1, drawn with its long plate (positive terminal) on the node X side and its short plate (negative terminal) on the op-amp's inverting input side; the non-inverting (+) input of A1 is grounded. Node X also connects, through another resistor R, to the inverting (-) input of A2; A2 has a feedback resistor R from its output V_out2 to its inverting input, and its non-inverting (+) input is grounded. All four resistors are equal to R.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

and . The answer is option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Assumptions: both op-amps are ideal (infinite gain, zero input current) and each has negative feedback, so each holds a virtual short between its inputs. The offset of is drawn as a battery in series with its inverting input, with the long plate (positive terminal) on the side of the junction node. Call the junction of the three resistors node .

  2. Virtual short at : its input is grounded, so its inverting input sits at . Going through the battery from its terminal to its terminal gives . So node is not a virtual ground.

  3. Virtual short at : its input is grounded, so its inverting input is at . The resistor from node therefore carries a current from node towards .

  4. KCL at node with . The battery branch carries no current, because the input current of is zero. Summing the currents entering :

  5. So . Another way to see it: node has two resistors to (the source resistor, since , and the resistor to the virtual ground of ) and the feedback resistor to . This gives a gain of from to .

  6. is an inverting amplifier with gain , driven by :

  7. Hence and , which is option (A).

KEY IDEA

A series offset source moves the node it is connected to. The virtual short pins the op-amp's inverting input at 0 V, so the junction node sits at instead of at virtual ground. That node sees two resistors to 0 V and one feedback resistor, so it is amplified by the noise gain . The second op-amp simply inverts with gain .

WATCH OUT FOR

A common mistake is to treat node as a virtual ground, which gives (options B or D). Another is to count only the source resistor when working out the gain, giving and (option D). The resistor to the virtual ground of also loads node , so the gain is 3. Reading the battery polarity backwards flips both signs.
