ISRO 2023 · ECQ.54 · 1 mark · MCQ

An ideal comparator is fed with a sine wave of 4Vpp (peak-to-peak) with zero DC component as shown in Figure. The reference voltage of the comparator is 1 V. What is the duty cycle of the output Vout?

Figure from the ISRO EC 2023 paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

An op-amp style comparator triangle. The non-inverting input (+) on top receives '4 Vpp Sine Wave'. The inverting input (-) at the bottom receives Vref = 1 V. The output on the right is labelled Vout.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The duty cycle of the output is , which is option (a).

Official answer: ASource: ISRO's revised and final answer key of 16 February 2024

  1. A peak-to-peak value of with zero DC component means the input is , with amplitude .

  2. The sine wave is applied to the non-inverting (+) input and to the inverting (-) input. An ideal comparator therefore gives a high output when and a low output otherwise.

  3. The switching points satisfy , so . Within one cycle this gives and .

  4. Between these two angles , so the output is high for out of .

  5. This is option (a). A duty cycle would need , and is the fraction of the cycle for which the output is low.

KEY IDEA

Find the angles where the sine wave crosses the reference level. The output is high only while the input exceeds the reference on the non-inverting side, and the duty cycle is that conduction angle divided by .

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking because the wave is symmetric, which holds only for a zero reference. Another slip is using the fraction of the cycle spent below the reference () instead of the time the output is high.
