The Lower Threshold Point (LTP) voltage of the Schmidt trigger with an ideal op-amp shown in Figure is ________.

ISRO EC 2023 question 53: An op-amp with supply pins +5 V (top) and -5 V (bottom).Tap to open full size
Figure from the ISRO EC 2023 paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

An op-amp with supply pins +5 V (top) and -5 V (bottom). Input Vin is applied to the inverting (-) input. The non-inverting (+) input is wired down and around to the junction of two resistors. The output Vout feeds a 10 kOhm resistor in series with a 5 kOhm resistor to ground; the + input connects to the node between the 10 kOhm and 5 kOhm resistors. This is a non-inverting-feedback (positive feedback) Schmidt trigger with the input on the inverting terminal.

  1. (A)

    5 V

  2. (B)

    -5 V

  3. (C)

    1.667 V

  4. (D)

    -1.667 V

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The lower threshold point is (option D).

Official answer: DSource: ISRO's revised and final answer key of 16 February 2024

  1. The input is applied to the inverting (-) terminal. The non-inverting (+) terminal is connected to the junction of the and resistors, which form a divider from to ground. The feedback is therefore positive and the circuit is an inverting Schmidt trigger.

  2. The fraction of the output fed back to the + input is .

  3. With supplies of and an ideal op-amp, the output saturates at or .

  4. The output changes state when equals the voltage at the + input, .

  5. With the threshold is . As rises above this value the output switches to .

  6. With the threshold is . As falls below this value the output switches back to .

  7. Hence the lower threshold point is , option (d). Option (c) is the upper threshold, and options (a) and (b) are the saturation levels, not thresholds.

KEY IDEA

In a Schmidt trigger the thresholds are the feedback fraction times each saturation level: , with set by the resistor divider at the + input. The LTP uses the negative saturation level.

WATCH OUT FOR

Giving the saturation voltage () as the threshold, or taking as by swapping the resistors. Another slip is giving the positive value , which is the upper threshold.
