Answer and solution

ANSWER

(B): the DTFT of x[n] converges when the ROC is , because that is the only valid ROC that contains the unit circle .

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Poles of : , so the pole radii are . A valid ROC is an annulus bounded by poles that contains no pole.

  2. Rule: the DTFT converges (i.e. is absolutely summable) only if the ROC contains the unit circle .

  3. The four possible ROCs are , , and . Only contains , because .

  4. (A) : this is the right-sided (causal) ROC. It lies entirely outside the unit circle, so the DTFT does not converge. Physically, the pole at then contributes a term proportional to , which grows without bound.

  5. (C) Left-sided sequence: the ROC must lie inside the innermost pole, i.e. . This is inside the unit circle, so the DTFT does not converge.

  6. (D) Right-sided sequence: the ROC must lie outside the outermost pole, i.e. , the same as (A). The DTFT does not converge.

  7. (B) contains the unit circle, so the DTFT converges. Check by partial fractions: With this ROC the poles at and are inside (right-sided terms) and the pole at is outside (left-sided term): Every term decays away from , so is a two-sided, absolutely summable sequence. Answer: (B).

KEY IDEA

The DTFT exists exactly when the ROC of contains the unit circle . With poles at radii , and , only the annulus contains , so the sequence must be two-sided: right-sided for the poles inside the unit circle, left-sided for the pole outside it.

WATCH OUT FOR

Choosing (D) on the reflex that "causal/right-sided means stable". A right-sided sequence has ROC (outside the outermost pole), and since the pole at lies outside the unit circle, that ROC misses . Stability plus causality needs every pole inside the unit circle, and this fails that.
