Answer and solution

ANSWER

(B) It is stable only when the impulse response is two-sided.

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. All-pass pole-zero rule: for to be constant, every pole at must have a paired zero at the conjugate-reciprocal point . The zero has the same angle as the pole and the reciprocal radius.

  2. Pole pairs with a zero at . Pole pairs with a zero at .

  3. So and are zeros, not poles. Option (A) is false.

  4. ROC and stability: an LTI system is stable exactly when the ROC of contains the unit circle . The ROC is a ring bounded by pole radii and contains no poles. Here one pole has radius (inside the unit circle) and one has radius (outside).

  5. A right-sided has ROC , where is the largest pole radius, so it cannot contain . A left-sided has ROC , where , so it cannot contain either. The only ROC that can contain the unit circle is an annulus lying between the pole at radius and the pole at radius (for the two given poles, ).

  6. An annular ROC means the impulse response is two-sided. So the system is stable only when is two-sided. Option (B) is true.

  7. An all-pass system has constant magnitude, not constant phase. If the phase were constant as well, would be one fixed complex number for every . Then , which has no poles, but this system is given to have poles. So the phase varies with and (C) is false.

  8. (D) is false for the same reason. is a non-constant rational function (it has poles and zeros), so its angle changes from point to point in the -plane, and it is not even defined at the zeros and .

  9. Answer: (B).

KEY IDEA

In an all-pass system every pole has a zero at . Stability needs the ROC to contain . With one pole inside the unit circle () and one outside (), the only ROC that can do that is an annulus, so must be two-sided.

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking (A) by treating the conjugate-reciprocal points and as poles, when an all-pass filter places ZEROS there. Picking (C) by confusing the all-pass property (constant magnitude) with constant phase. Also assuming a stable system must be causal: a pole outside the unit circle forces a stable system to be non-causal and two-sided.
