GATE 2023 · EEQ.63 · 2 marks · NAT

A signal is sampled at 200 Hz and then passed through an ideal low pass filter having cut-off frequency of 100 Hz.

The maximum frequency present in the filtered signal in Hz is ________ (Round off to the nearest integer).

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The maximum frequency in the filtered signal is 80 Hz. The 120 Hz tone is undersampled at 200 Hz and folds down to 200 − 120 = 80 Hz, and the 100 Hz low pass filter keeps it.

Official answer: 80Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Product-to-sum identity: , so The signal holds two tones, and .

  2. Nyquist check: needs . Here , so the 120 Hz tone aliases.

  3. Spectrum of the sampled signal: every tone reappears at for integer . For : . For : (since ).

  4. Ideal LPF, cut-off 100 Hz: it passes only the components below . Those are and the alias at . The original tone and every higher image are removed. No component sits exactly at 100 Hz, so the edge of the passband does not matter.

  5. The filtered output is , so the highest frequency in it is .

KEY IDEA

First split the product into its two tones (60 Hz and 120 Hz). Sampling at f_s copies each tone f_0 to |k f_s ± f_0|. The reconstruction filter keeps every copy below its cut-off, and that includes any alias that folds down into the passband.

WATCH OUT FOR

Three answers come up often and are wrong. 90 Hz comes from reading the tones straight off the product (90 Hz and 30 Hz) without applying product-to-sum. 60 Hz comes from assuming the filter just deletes the 120 Hz tone. 120 Hz comes from ignoring aliasing. The 120 Hz tone is not simply removed: it lands at 80 Hz, inside the passband, and survives.
