GATE 2018 EC question 54: Plot of |H(f)| (vertical axis) against f (kHz) (horizontal axis).Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2018 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Plot of |H(f)| (vertical axis) against f (kHz) (horizontal axis). The magnitude response is a symmetric trapezoid centred at f = 0: it is flat at height K for -6 ≤ f ≤ 6 kHz (dashed vertical lines drop from the corners at f = -6 and f = 6), falls linearly from K to 0 between f = 6 and f = 8 kHz on the right and between f = -6 and f = -8 kHz on the left, and is zero for |f| ≥ 8 kHz. Axis labels marked: -8, -6, 0, 6, 8 on the frequency axis; K on the vertical axis.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The minimum sampling rate for perfect reconstruction is .

  1. Spectrum of the sampled signal (ideal impulse sampling): The baseband copy () occupies , and the -th copy occupies .

  2. Condition 1 (the wanted copy is not distorted): the whole baseband must lie where the gain is constant. The flat region of is , so this holds whatever is.

  3. Condition 2 (no image leaks through): every shifted copy must lie where , that is . In the sloped band the gain is between and , so any image content falling there would appear, attenuated, in the output.

  4. The first image (, and by symmetry ) is the closest one, so it sets the requirement. Its lower edge must satisfy For any the band from up to falls on the slope, where , so part of the image passes and reconstruction is not exact.

  5. Check at : the first image spans (and for ), where , so it is completely rejected. Higher-order images lie even further out. The filter output is , a scaled copy of , so reconstruction is exact.

  6. Minimum sampling rate: . This is above the Nyquist rate of because the reconstruction filter has a transition band instead of a brick-wall cut-off.

KEY IDEA

With a non-ideal reconstruction filter you need two conditions. First, the signal band must sit inside the flat passband (; here ). Second, the first spectral image must start at or beyond the stopband edge: , so .

WATCH OUT FOR

Answering the Nyquist rate ignores the filter's transition band. Other wrong routes: using the passband edge (, which gives ), which lets the image into the sloped band where ; or taking twice the filter's stopband edge (), which treats the filter as if it were the signal's bandwidth.
