Answer and solution

ANSWER

The correct statements are (B) and (C).

Official answer: B, CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 DA (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Recall that the CDF is . It is non-decreasing, right-continuous, with and .

  2. (A) For any smaller than every value that can take, is empty, so . Zero is not a positive number, so is not always positive. (A) is false.

  3. (B) If , then , so . Hence is non-decreasing. (B) is true.

  4. (C) A discrete random variable takes some value with . At that point , so has a jump discontinuity of size . (C) is true.

  5. (D) Because includes the point mass at , we get , so is right continuous. At a jump point, , so is not left continuous. (D) is false.

  6. The correct statements are (B) and (C).

KEY IDEA

Any CDF is non-decreasing and right continuous, and its jump at a point equals the point mass there. A discrete variable has such jumps, so has jump discontinuities and is not left continuous.

WATCH OUT FOR

Mixing up right and left continuity. Because uses , it is right continuous, not left continuous. Another slip is calling "positive" when it is only non-negative, since it equals to the left of the smallest value of .
