GATE 2025 · DAQ.54 · 2 marks · MSQ

Consider a coin-toss experiment where the probability of head showing up is . In the coin toss, let if head appears, and if tail appears. Consider where is the total number of independent coin tosses. Which of the following statements is/are correct?

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

    As increases, variance of decreases

  4. (D)

Variance of does not depend on

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The correct options are (A) and (C): and decreases as grows.

Official answer: A, CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 DA (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Each is a Bernoulli() variable, so and .

  2. Mean, by linearity of expectation: . So is unbiased: (A) is true and (B) is false, because would only equal when (or ).

  3. Variance: the tosses are independent, so variances add and . Hence .

  4. The variance has in the denominator, so for fixed with it decreases as increases: (C) is true, and (D) is false because the variance depends on .

  5. Correct options: (A) and (C).

KEY IDEA

The sample proportion is the mean of independent Bernoulli() variables. Its mean is (unbiased), and its variance is , which shrinks as grows.

WATCH OUT FOR

Confusing the mean of the average with the mean of the sum. , but dividing by gives , not . Another slip is forgetting that is squared in the variance, which gives instead of .
