The single line diagram of a lossless system is shown in the figure. The system is operating in steady-state at a stable equilibrium point with the power output of the generator being , where is the load angle and the mechanical power input is . A fault occurs on line 2 such that the power output of the generator is less than during the fault. After the fault is cleared by opening line 2, the power output of the generator is . If the critical fault clearing angle is radians, the accelerating area on the power angle curve is ______ times (rounded off to 2 decimal places).

Figure description

Single line diagram: a generator (sine-wave circle symbol) on a bus labelled 'Generator bus', connected through a two-winding transformer symbol to a sending-end bus; two parallel lines, Line 1 (upper) and Line 2 (lower), join that bus to the 'Infinite bus' at the right. No numeric values are marked.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The accelerating area is about .

Official answer: 0.10 to 0.12Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Work in units of . Mechanical input . Before the fault , so .

  2. After the fault is cleared (line 2 open) . The rotor swings forward until again on the falling side of the curve: , so .

  3. At the critical clearing angle the rotor just reaches , so the equal area criterion gives . The during-fault curve is not given, so is found from .

  4. Decelerating area:

  5. Evaluate: , and .

  6. , hence .

KEY IDEA

With critical clearing the rotor just reaches the post-fault maximum angle where the post-fault equals (here ). Equal area then gives the accelerating area as the decelerating area, computed from the post-fault curve alone, so the unknown during-fault curve is not needed.

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking as (the rising-side root) instead of , or integrating the decelerating area from rather than from the clearing angle .
