Consider a lossy transmission line with and as the sending and receiving end voltages, respectively. and are the series impedance and reactance of the line, respectively. The steady-state stability limit for the transmission line will be

  1. (A)

    greater than

  2. (B)

    less than

    equal to

  4. (D)

    equal to

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The steady-state stability limit of the lossy line is less than , option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Let the line have series impedance with . Because the line is lossy, , so and . Take the shunt admittance as negligible, so the ABCD constants are , .

  2. Power received at the receiving end, with the angle by which leads :

  3. is largest when , that is . The steady-state stability limit is this maximum:

  4. Compare with the lossless value . Since , the first term satisfies .

  5. The subtracted term is positive because , so it lowers the limit further. Hence .

  6. Check: as , , and , so , the lossless value. Any resistance lowers the limit, so the answer is (B).

KEY IDEA

For a lossy line the received power is . Its maximum, at , is smaller than the lossless limit because and the second term is subtracted.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the lossless formula (the stability limit at ) even though the line has resistance. In a lossy line the maximum occurs at , not , and its value is lower.
