A single-phase full bridge voltage source inverter (VSI) feeds a purely inductive load. The inverter output voltage is a square wave in 180° conduction mode. The fundamental frequency of the output voltage is 50 Hz. If the DC input voltage of the inverter is 100 V and the value of the load inductance is 20 mH, the peak-to-peak load current in amperes is ______ (rounded off to the nearest integer).

Answer and solution
ANSWER
The peak-to-peak load current is 50 A.
Official answer: 50Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)
Full-bridge VSI in conduction: each diagonal pair conducts for half a period, so each pair has duty ratio . There is no phase control here (firing angle ). The output is a square wave .
Period , so each half-cycle lasts .
The load is purely inductive, so . During each half-cycle is constant, so the current changes linearly and the load current is a triangular wave.
The average of over a cycle is zero, so in steady state the average load current is zero and the current is symmetric about zero. It swings between and .
Change in current over one half-cycle:
This change takes the current from to , so with . The peak-to-peak load current is .
KEY IDEA
With a purely inductive load, a constant square-wave voltage makes the current ramp linearly. The peak-to-peak current equals the volt-seconds of one half-cycle divided by L, which is .
WATCH OUT FOR
Using the fundamental component of the square wave, , with gives the fundamental peak-to-peak current, about 40.5 A, not the actual triangular current of 50 A. Another slip is taking the whole period instead of for the ramp, which gives 100 A.
