Figure from the GATE 2023 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Three supply terminals on the left, labelled '3-phase, 50 Hz, 415 V (r.m.s.) supply terminals'. Each supply terminal connects through a series line inductor L to a load terminal: top line to terminal A, middle line to terminal B, bottom line to terminal C. At the load, three identical branches, each a resistor R in series with a capacitor C, are connected in delta: one R-C branch between A and B, one between B and C, and one between C and A (the C-A branch is drawn with a return wire from the right side back up to A). Values printed below the figure: R = 15 Ω, L = 31.83 mH, C = 212.21 μF.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

.

Official answer: 414 to 416Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Reactances at : , and .

  2. Impedance of each delta branch (R in series with C): .

  3. The load is balanced, so replace the delta with an equivalent star: per phase.

  4. Per-phase equivalent circuit (supply neutral to the load's equivalent star point ): the line inductance is in series with , so , and .

  5. The supply terminal voltage does not change with loading, so the supply phase voltage stays at . Line current: .

  6. Voltage across one phase of the equivalent star load: . The voltage-divider ratio shows the same thing: , whose magnitude is .

  7. Line voltage at the load terminals: . In magnitude, the capacitive load exactly cancels the drop across the line inductance. Only the phase changes: the load voltage lags the supply voltage by .

KEY IDEA

Convert the balanced delta load to an equivalent star () and solve a single-phase circuit: a stiff source, then of line reactance, then the star-phase load. The divider ratio has magnitude 1. So the load line voltage has the same magnitude as the supply (415 V) and lags it by .

WATCH OUT FOR

Putting the line inductance in series with the delta branch impedance without converting to star first, i.e. . Line elements carry line current, so they can only be combined with the per-phase star equivalent . The second trap is assuming a series line inductance must lower the load voltage. With a capacitive load there can be no drop at all, or even a rise. Here the magnitude is unchanged.
