A 3-phase, star-connected, balanced load is supplied from a 3-phase, 400 V (rms), balanced voltage source with phase sequence R-Y-B, as shown in the figure. If the wattmeter reading is and the line current is (rms), then the power factor of the load per phase is

Figure from the GATE 2023 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Left: a box labelled '3 Phase 400 V Balanced Source' with three output lines labelled R (top), Y (middle) and B (bottom). All three run right to a box labelled '3 Phase Star Connected Balanced Load'. A single wattmeter (a circle labelled 'Wattmeter') has four terminals: M and L (current coil) on top, and C (marked +) and V (marked -) on the bottom. The current coil is in series with line R. The line current I_R (arrow pointing right, from source to load) enters terminal M and leaves terminal L toward the load. The pressure coil's + terminal C connects down to line Y (junction dot on Y). Its - terminal V connects down to line B (junction dot on B), crossing line Y with a hop (no connection). So the current coil carries I_R and the pressure coil measures V_YB (Y positive relative to B).

  1. (A)

    Unity

  2. (B)

    0.5 leading

  3. (C)

    0.866 leading

  4. (D)

    0.707 lagging

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The power factor per phase is 0.866 leading, option (C). The meter carries and sees , so it reads . That gives and (leading).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. What the meter sees. The current coil carries , which enters at M. The pressure coil has its + end (C) on Y and its − end (V) on B, so it measures . The reading is

  2. Phasors for sequence R-Y-B. Take the star load's as reference, with (rms):

  3. Line voltage across the pressure coil:

  4. Line current. In a star load the line current equals the phase current, so . Here is the angle by which the load current lags its own phase voltage : means lagging and means leading.

  5. Angle between the coil quantities: . Since , the reading is So this connection measures reactive power, and .

  6. Use the reading: The current leads its phase voltage by , so the load is capacitive.

  7. Power factor per phase: leading, which is option (C). Check: . The negative sign means the load supplies reactive power, which is what a leading (capacitive) load does.

KEY IDEA

With its current coil in one line (R) and its pressure coil across the other two lines (Y to B), one wattmeter reads , not . For sequence R-Y-B, lags by exactly , so the reading measures reactive power: . The sign of the reading tells you whether the load lags or leads.

WATCH OUT FOR

There are three common mistakes. (1) Using the phase voltage instead of the line voltage across the pressure coil. That gives and the trap option (B), 0.5 leading. (2) Reading the pressure coil as instead of (ignoring the + mark on C), or taking the sequence as R-B-Y. Either one flips the sign and gives 0.866 lagging. (3) Treating the reading as as if it were an active-power meter.
