Figure from the GATE 2025 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Figure (a): a two-port made of two magnetically coupled coils. The left coil, 3 H, is vertical and connects the top-left terminal A_1 (upper wire) to the bottom-left terminal A_2 (lower wire). Its dot is at its TOP end, the end joined to A_1. The right coil, 2 H, is vertical and connects the top-right terminal B_1 (upper wire) to the bottom-right terminal B_2 (lower wire). Its dot is at its BOTTOM end, the end joined to B_2. A curved double-headed arrow between the two coils is labelled 4 H (the mutual inductance). The lower wire runs straight from A_2 to B_2, so A_2 and B_2 are a common node. Current i_1 enters at A_1 (arrow pointing right, into the circuit). Current i_2 enters at B_1 (arrow pointing left, into the circuit). Figure (b): the T-equivalent. L_1 is a series inductor from A_1 to a middle node, L_2 is a series inductor from the middle node to B_1, and L_3 is a shunt inductor from the middle node down to the bottom wire, which joins A_2 to B_2. i_1 enters at A_1 (arrow pointing right) and i_2 enters at B_1 (arrow pointing left).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, , , which is option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 IN (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Dot convention. enters the 3 H coil at its dotted (top) end. enters the 2 H coil at its top end, which is the undotted one, because that coil's dot is at the bottom. One current enters a dot and the other does not, so every mutual voltage term carries a minus sign: it appears as with .

  2. Terminal equations of Figure (a), with across (positive at ) and across (positive at ):

  3. Terminal equations of the T-model (b). flows through and through into the middle node, so carries down to the common bottom wire. KVL on each side gives

  4. Match the cross (mutual) terms: the coefficient of in (and of in ) gives .

  5. Match the self terms: , and .

  6. Therefore , and , which is option (A). A negative inductance is normal in an equivalent circuit: the T-model only has to reproduce the terminal equations, not be built from physical parts.

KEY IDEA

A coupled pair with a common terminal is equivalent to a T of uncoupled inductors. When both terminal currents enter dotted ends (mutual terms ), the arms are and and the shunt is . When one current enters a dot and the other does not (mutual terms ), the arms are and and the shunt is . Here that gives , and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Ignoring where the dots are and always using . That gives , and , which is exactly distractor (B). Here the 2 H coil's dot is at its bottom (common) end, so enters the undotted terminal and the mutual terms are negative. A second trap is rejecting option (A) because it contains a negative inductance. Negative elements are allowed in an equivalent circuit.
