Figure from the GATE 2023 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two coils side by side, drawn vertically. Left coil (the 4 H inductor carrying i1) has its top lead going off to the left; an arrow labelled i1(t) on that top lead points right, so i1 flows into the coil's top terminal. A dot sits at the top end of the left coil. Right coil (the 5 H inductor carrying i2) has its top lead going off to the right; an arrow labelled i2(t) on that top lead points left, so i2 flows into the coil's top terminal. A dot sits at the top end of the right coil. The bottom leads go outward (left coil to the left, right coil to the right). So both currents enter their dotted terminals.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The peak energy stored in the coupled inductors is about 17.37 μJ.

Official answer: 17.00 to 18.00Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Dot convention: in the figure, enters the dotted (top) end of the 4 H coil and enters the dotted (top) end of the 5 H coil. Both currents enter dots, so the mutual fluxes aid each other and the mutual energy term carries a plus sign, .

  2. Mutual inductance from the coupling coefficient:

  3. Instantaneous energy stored in a coupled pair (both currents entering dots):

  4. The two currents are in phase: and . So every term is proportional to , and the mutual term is never negative. The energy is therefore largest when , the instant when and at the same time.

  5. Put in the peak values:

  6. Add the three terms: .

KEY IDEA

The energy stored in coupled inductors is , with . Use the plus sign when both currents enter (or both leave) their dotted ends. Here the two currents are in phase, so all three terms peak together, when both currents are at their peak values.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the minus sign for the mutual term gives . The right sign comes from reading the dots correctly: both currents enter dotted ends here. Other slips: leaving out the mutual term entirely (12 μJ), or taking or instead of . Some also use rms currents, but the question asks for the peak energy, which needs the peak currents.
