Figure from the GATE 2022 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A single-loop circuit. On the left, an ac voltage source V1 (circle with sine symbol) connected between a top wire and a bottom wire. A vertical line with arrowheads at its top and bottom ends, labelled 'Load', marks the boundary just to the right of the source: everything to its right is the load. Top branch (going right from the source): R1 and C1 connected in parallel with each other (R1 drawn above, C1 below), forming one block in the top wire. Right vertical side: inductor L1, connecting the top wire down to the bottom wire. Bottom branch: resistor R2 in the bottom wire, returning to the source. So the load is (R1 || C1) in series with L1 and R2, directly across V1.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The load impedance is (), so the power factor is (leading).

Official answer: 0.8Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Angular frequency: .

  2. Capacitive reactance: so the capacitor's impedance is .

  3. Inductive reactance: so the inductor's impedance is .

  4. and are in parallel (product over sum):

  5. Everything to the right of the marked terminals is the load: , and in series.

  6. Power factor . It is leading because the net reactance, , is capacitive: the current leads the voltage. The source voltage magnitude does not affect the power factor.

KEY IDEA

Power factor is of the load impedance angle, i.e. . The unusual values (, ) are chosen so the cancels against . That gives clean reactances (, ). Reduce to one series impedance, then add the series elements.

WATCH OUT FOR

Adding and as if they were in series, which gives and a power factor of about . The same error happens when is taken as instead of using the real part of the parallel combination () plus . A second slip is forgetting the or unit factors on and .
