Figure from the GATE 2022 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two-port circuit, input terminals on the left, output terminals on the right. From the upper input terminal, an inductor L_0 and a capacitor C_0 are connected in series along the top wire, in that order from left to right. After C_0 the top wire meets a vertical resistor R_0, which runs down to the bottom wire. The bottom wire is common from the lower input terminal to the lower output terminal. The output terminals are taken directly across R_0 (upper output from the top of R_0, lower output from its bottom). Labels: 'Input' on the left, 'Output' on the right. So it is a series R-L-C loop with the output voltage across the resistor.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The Q factor of the filter is .

Official answer: 6.22 to 6.42Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Identify the topology. , and are all in series with the input source, and the output is taken across . By voltage division, This is a second-order bandpass response: as (capacitor open) and as (inductor open), with its peak at series resonance.

  2. Centre (resonant) frequency. At resonance the reactances cancel, :

  3. Bandwidth (half-power points). when , i.e. . Taking the positive root of each quadratic, so

  4. Q of a series RLC.

  5. Substitute.

  6. Round to two decimal places: . Check: .

KEY IDEA

With the output across , the circuit is a series RLC with voltage transfer . That gives a bandpass response centred at , with half-power bandwidth , so .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the parallel-RLC formula gives . The elements here are in series, so goes in the denominator. Another slip is mixing units: writing as instead of gives .
