Let be similar matrices. Which of the following is true?
- (A)
det(A) = det(B)
- (B)
tr(A) = tr(B)
- (C)
A, B have the same eigen values, same characteristic polynomial
- (D)
All of the above
Let be similar matrices. Which of the following is true?
det(A) = det(B)
tr(A) = tr(B)
A, B have the same eigen values, same characteristic polynomial
All of the above
ANSWER
(D) All of the above: similar matrices share determinant, trace, characteristic polynomial and eigenvalues.
Official answer: DSource: ISRO's final answer key of 15 May 2026
Similar matrices means there is an invertible with .
Determinant: , so option (a) is true.
Characteristic polynomial: . So and have the same characteristic polynomial, hence the same eigenvalues, so option (c) is true.
Trace: using , , so option (b) is true. (Equivalently, the trace is the sum of the eigenvalues, which are the same.)
Options (a), (b) and (c) are all true, so the answer is (d), All of the above.
KEY IDEA
A similarity transformation preserves the characteristic polynomial, and with it the eigenvalues, trace (sum of eigenvalues) and determinant (product of eigenvalues).
WATCH OUT FOR
Picking only one property, such as equal eigenvalues, and not noticing that trace and determinant follow from it. Note the converse is false: equal eigenvalues do not by themselves make two matrices similar.
