Consider matrix and vector . The number of distinct real values of for which the equation has infinitely many solutions is ________.
GATE 2018 EC Q.22: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
vanishes at and , so there are distinct real values of .

A homogeneous system always has the trivial solution . It has infinitely many solutions exactly when (the number of unknowns). For a square matrix this is the condition .
Expand the determinant:
Factorise: .
Set : (a double root) or . Both are real.
Check : , rank , so every is a solution. Infinitely many solutions.
Check : , rank , so the system reduces to , i.e. with free. A one-parameter family of solutions.
The root is repeated, but it is still only one value of . The distinct real values are and , so the count is .
KEY IDEA
A homogeneous square system has non-trivial (and so infinitely many) solutions exactly when . Find the real roots of as a polynomial in and count each distinct root once.
WATCH OUT FOR
Counting roots with multiplicity: has three roots counted with multiplicity (), which leads some candidates to answer , but the question asks for DISTINCT values, which gives . A second trap is cancelling a factor of from the determinant, or dividing a row by , which quietly throws away the root and gives .
