COMPLEMENT AND ADDITION RULE

Holds for any two events. Use the complement for every 'at least one' question: .

INCLUSION-EXCLUSION FOR THREE EVENTS

Add singles, subtract pairs, add the triple. The same pattern counts elements of a union: replace by .

CLASSICAL PROBABILITY

Only when the sample space has finitely many outcomes and all of them are equally likely.

PERMUTATIONS AND COMBINATIONS

Permutations count ordered arrangements of of distinct objects; combinations count unordered selections. and .

OTHER COUNTING RULES

In the second rule . The circular count treats rotations as the same arrangement; if reflections are also the same (a necklace), the count is for .

CONDITIONAL PROBABILITY

Undefined when . In general .

MULTIPLICATION RULE

The chain form is how sequential draws without replacement are multiplied along a tree.

INDEPENDENCE

Equivalently when . If are independent, so are and , and , and and . Three events are mutually independent only if all three pairwise products hold AND ; pairwise independence alone is not enough.

THEOREM OF TOTAL PROBABILITY

must partition : mutually exclusive, together exhaustive, each with .

BAYES' THEOREM

Same partition conditions, and . is the prior probability of cause ; is its posterior probability after observing .

PMF (DISCRETE)

To find an unknown constant in a PMF, set the total equal to 1.

PDF (CONTINUOUS)

For a continuous variable , so and give the same probability.

CDF

Every CDF is non-decreasing and right-continuous, with as and as . The relation holds for a continuous variable at every where is differentiable. For a discrete variable is a staircase that jumps by at each value , so and strict and non-strict inequalities give different answers.

EXPECTATION

The mean exists only when the sum or integral converges absolutely. does not need the distribution of itself.

VARIANCE AND STANDARD DEVIATION

Here . Variance is never negative, and is zero only when is a constant with probability 1. The second form is the one to compute with.

LINEAR TRANSFORMATION

For any constants . Adding moves the mean but not the spread; the sign of does not affect the variance.

DENSITY OF A FUNCTION OF A RANDOM VARIABLE

For a that is not monotonic, work through the CDF: find , then differentiate. For example gives and for , with continuous.

BINOMIAL DISTRIBUTION

Number of successes in independent trials, each with the same success probability . Mean , variance , which is less than the mean whenever .

POISSON DISTRIBUTION

Count of events that occur independently at a constant average rate. Mean = variance = . If events occur as a Poisson process at rate per unit time, the count in a time is Poisson with .

POISSON AS A LIMIT OF THE BINOMIAL

Used as an approximation when is large and is small (rare events): put .

GEOMETRIC DISTRIBUTION

Convention here: is the number of the trial on which the first success occurs, and . If instead counts the failures before the first success, for , the mean becomes and the variance is unchanged. Among distributions on the positive integers, the geometric is the only memoryless one.

UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION

for and for . The probability of a sub-interval of is its length divided by .

EXPONENTIAL DISTRIBUTION

Rate ; and are zero for . Mean and variance , so the standard deviation equals the mean; the median is . It is the waiting time to the first event, and between successive events, of a Poisson process of rate .

MEMORYLESS PROPERTY

Holds for the exponential, the only continuous distribution with this property: a component that has survived to time has the same remaining-life distribution as a new one.

MINIMUM OF INDEPENDENT EXPONENTIALS

Proof: . Rates add, not means. The maximum is not exponential: .

NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

Symmetric about ; mean = median = mode = ; points of inflection at ; peak height .

STANDARDISATION AND THE TABLE CONVENTION

Convention in these notes: , the area to the LEFT of , with . Some tables list the area from 0 to , which equals ; check which one you are given.

THE 68-95-99.7 RULE (APPROXIMATE)

For a normal variable only. The rounded figures 68%, 95% and 99.7% are approximations; use the table value whenever a question supplies one. Standard quantiles: , , .

MARGINAL AND CONDITIONAL DISTRIBUTIONS

Discrete: (the totals along one direction of the table) and .

INDEPENDENCE OF RANDOM VARIABLES

Discrete case: one pair of values where the equality fails proves dependence. Continuous case: the equality must fail on a region of positive area (a single point proves nothing, since a density can be changed at a point); if both sides are continuous, one point of failure is enough. If the set where is not of the product form (for example the triangle ), and cannot be independent.

LAW OF TOTAL EXPECTATION

partition with each . is the mean of the conditional distribution: or . This is total probability applied to means.

COVARIANCE

and .

CORRELATION COEFFICIENT

Defined only when and . exactly when with probability 1 for some ( then has the sign of ). is unchanged by shifting either variable or rescaling it by a positive factor; rescaling one variable by a negative factor reverses its sign.

VARIANCE OF A LINEAR COMBINATION

Always true. When are uncorrelated (in particular, independent) the covariance term drops, so : variances add even for a difference.

SUMS OF RANDOM VARIABLES

Means always add; variances add when the variables are independent (pairwise uncorrelated is enough). Also, for independent : .

SUMS OF INDEPENDENT STANDARD VARIABLES

Each line requires the variables to be independent. A linear combination of independent normals is normal with mean and variance .

MEAN OF DATA

For grouped (class-interval) data, is the class mid-point and the result is an approximation. Deviations from the mean always sum to zero (weighted by frequency for frequency data).

VARIANCE AND STANDARD DEVIATION OF DATA

: population (divisor ); : sample (divisor ). The standard deviation is the positive square root. Adding a constant to every value changes neither; multiplying every value by multiplies the standard deviation by .

CORRELATION COEFFICIENT OF DATA

Defined when neither variable is constant (); then . The divisors cancel, so is the same whether or is used, provided the same one is used throughout. Computational form: .

RANK CORRELATION (SPEARMAN)

is the difference between the two ranks of item . Valid when there are no tied ranks; with ties, give tied items the average of their ranks and compute from the ranks directly. Like , it lies between and .

THE TWO REGRESSION LINES

The line of on minimises the sum of squared vertical deviations and is used to predict from ; the line of on minimises squared horizontal deviations and predicts from . Both lines pass through .

PRODUCT OF THE REGRESSION COEFFICIENTS

, and all have the same sign, and that common sign is taken for . Since , the two coefficients cannot both exceed 1 in magnitude.

SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF THE MEAN

Needs only independence (uncorrelated is enough) and a common mean and variance, not normality. Quadrupling halves the standard error.

UNBIASED SAMPLE VARIANCE

Dividing by instead gives an estimate whose expected value is , slightly too small; this is why the sample variance uses .

CENTRAL LIMIT THEOREM

For independent, identically distributed with finite, non-zero variance, whatever their distribution. If the are themselves normal, the result is exact for every .

CHEBYSHEV'S INEQUALITY

Holds for ANY distribution with finite variance, so it is a loose bound (and says nothing for ): for a normal variable the true probability at is about , against the bound . Applied to , whose variance is , it gives for every : the weak law of large numbers.
