GATE Engineering Mathematics formula sheet
251 formulas in 7 topics, each with when to use it. Each is explained in the topic notes.
Print the whole sheetREVERSAL LAWS
The order reverses for any number of factors, e.g. . The transpose and conjugate-transpose laws hold whenever is defined, square or not; the inverse laws need every factor square and non-singular.
MORE INVERSE RULES
non-singular, a scalar and a positive integer. A diagonal matrix with non-zero diagonal entries has inverse , and the inverse of a non-singular upper (lower) triangular matrix is again upper (lower) triangular.
STANDARD LIMITS AT ZERO
in radians, . Each follows from the Maclaurin series of the function.
EXPONENTIAL AND POWER LIMITS
The last holds for any real when .
DOT (SCALAR) PRODUCT
A scalar; is the angle between the vectors. Commutative. For non-zero vectors, means perpendicular. , .
ANGLE, COMPONENT AND PROJECTION
The scalar component of along is signed (negative when ); the vector projection lies along . The direction cosines of a non-zero are , , , and their squares add to 1.
LINEAR ODE OF ORDER N
Linear means and every derivative appear only to the first power, are never multiplied together, and never sit inside another function. The coefficients may depend on only, and the equation has order wherever . The equation is homogeneous when and non-homogeneous otherwise.
VARIABLES SEPARABLE
Valid where . Each root of is a separate constant solution, and dividing by can lose it (sometimes it reappears for a particular value of the constant). For , substitute to get the separable equation .
CARTESIAN, POLAR AND EXPONENTIAL FORMS
Conjugate , with , and . The argument is fixed only up to adding .
PRINCIPAL ARGUMENT
Here returns a value in , and is undefined. Some texts take the principal range as ; these notes use throughout, so .
COMPLEMENT AND ADDITION RULE
Holds for any two events. Use the complement for every 'at least one' question: .
INCLUSION-EXCLUSION FOR THREE EVENTS
Add singles, subtract pairs, add the triple. The same pattern counts elements of a union: replace by .
LU DECOMPOSITION
Doolittle form: is unit lower triangular (1s on its diagonal) and holds the multipliers below the diagonal; is the upper-triangular matrix that Gaussian elimination without row swaps produces. Crout form puts the 1s on the diagonal of instead. For a non-singular , the factorisation exists without row swaps exactly when every leading principal minor of is non-zero. One factorisation serves any number of right-hand sides .
GAUSS-JACOBI ITERATION
Every new component uses only the previous sweep's values. Needs (reorder the equations if necessary).
