The position of a particle is described by the differential equation:
The initial conditions are and . The position (accurate to two decimal places) of the particle at is ________.
The position of a particle is described by the differential equation:
The initial conditions are and . The position (accurate to two decimal places) of the particle at is ________.
ANSWER
.
Official answer: -0.23 to -0.19Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)
Move every term to one side: . This is a linear, homogeneous ODE with constant coefficients.
Auxiliary equation: .
The roots are complex, with and , so the general solution is .
Apply : .
Differentiate with the product rule: At : .
So the solution that meets both initial conditions is .
Evaluate at , using and :
KEY IDEA
Write the equation as . Its auxiliary roots are , so the motion is a decaying oscillation, . Use the two initial conditions to find and . At the sine term is zero, so only is left.
WATCH OUT FOR
Setting because . The decay factor also contributes to the derivative, so and . At this particular slip does no harm, because . The same slip does change the answer at other times. Another mistake is copying the signs wrongly when moving terms across, for example writing . That gives a growing solution and . Some candidates also forget the negative sign that brings in and enter .
