A curve passes through the point and satisfies the differential equation The equation that describes the curve is
- (A)
- (B)
- (C)
- (D)
A curve passes through the point and satisfies the differential equation The equation that describes the curve is
ANSWER
The curve is , which is option (A).
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)
Substitute , so . The last term of the equation, , is just .
Rewrite the first term: .
Substituting gives . The cancels on both sides, leaving . Divide by : .
Separate the variables: . The numerator is the derivative of the denominator, so with gives No modulus is needed because .
Put back: .
Use the point : , so and . The curve is
Check: this curve gives . Differentiating, . From the differential equation, . The two expressions are the same, so the answer is option (A).
KEY IDEA
The right-hand side depends on and , so try . The term cancels the that comes from , and the factors also cancel. That leaves the separable equation . It integrates directly to because the numerator is the derivative of the denominator.
WATCH OUT FOR
Integrating as , which confuses it with . That extra half gives option (B). Options (C) and (D) come from putting back where belongs, i.e. writing where the answer has .
