ANSWER
, so the answer is option (B).
Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)
Factor the denominator: , so . The numerator is not zero at or , so has poles of order 2 at and . Both lie inside .
For a pole of order 2 at , the residue is .
At : , and . At this is .
At : , and . At this is .
By Cauchy's residue theorem,
Quick check: for large , There is no term, so the residue at infinity is . The residues at all finite poles plus the residue at infinity add up to zero, so the finite residues must add up to . This agrees with .
The answer is , which is option (B).
KEY IDEA
Both double poles, and , lie inside . Their residues are and , which cancel. There is a shortcut: when a contour encloses every singularity of a rational function whose denominator degree is at least 2 more than its numerator degree (here 4 against 2), the integral is , because the function has no term at infinity.
WATCH OUT FOR
Using the simple-pole formula at what are actually double poles, since the whole denominator is squared. A second mistake is a sign error in the quotient rule, for example writing where it should be , which gives residues that do not cancel and leads to or .
