GATE 2022 IN Q.28: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
The global minimum of occurs at , where the function equals .
Official answer: -3.0Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)
Let . For , both and , so . For , , so . The global minimum is therefore negative and must lie on .
For , , so .
Differentiate with the product rule:
Critical points on : there , so only when , i.e. .
Sign of : for , so and is decreasing. For , and is increasing. So on the whole half-line , , with equality only at .
Value there: .
Global check: for every , . Together with step 5, for all real . (As a sanity check, as because the exponential decays faster than grows.) The global minimum therefore occurs at .
KEY IDEA
Remove the modulus by splitting at . The function is non-negative for , so the minimum must be on , where . There changes sign from negative to positive only at , so decreases down to and rises after it. That monotonicity makes the global minimum, not just a local one.
WATCH OUT FOR
Writing on the negative side (forgetting that there). That gives and the answer , which is actually where the global maximum occurs. Another slip is to report from : there, but does not change sign at , so is neither a maximum nor a minimum.
