A periodic function , with period 2, is defined as
The Fourier series of this function contains ________
Both and where

ANSWER
(B) Only where . The function is odd, so every cosine and constant coefficient is zero, and is non-zero for every .
Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)
The period is , so . The Fourier series is therefore built from the constant , and .
Check parity. Take , so . Then . So is odd on . The value at the single point does not affect any coefficient.
For an odd , the product is odd, so and . There is no constant term and no cosine term.
Since is even, the sine coefficients are
Integrate by parts with and :
So for every , and
The series contains only terms, and it contains one for every . The answer is (B).
KEY IDEA
Test for parity before you integrate anything. If over one period, then and every are zero and only sine terms are left. Here , so the function is odd. is non-zero for every , so the series has a sine term at every harmonic, not only at the even or odd ones.
WATCH OUT FOR
Judging the function by its graph. The graph jumps at and each piece has a constant offset, so it can look as though it has a DC term or even symmetry, and students pick (A). The two constant offsets are and , which is exactly what makes odd. A second trap is (D): the harmonics would appear only if the period were 1, but here (on , while ).
