Answer and solution

ANSWER

TM waves propagate only above the TM cut-off , so the correct options are (A) and (C) . The official key is MTA (marks were given to all candidates).

Official answer: marks to all candidatesSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Plate separation: . The dielectric is air, so .

  2. Put the plates at and . In a TM wave, is tangential to both perfectly conducting plates, so it must be zero at and . That gives with The phase constant of the TM mode is It is real, so the mode propagates, only when . Below that frequency is imaginary and the mode is evanescent.

  3. For the longitudinal field is , so that mode is the TEM mode, not a TM wave. A true TM wave needs , so the lowest TM mode is TM.

  4. Cut-off frequency of TM: Every higher TM mode has a higher cut-off, . So a frequency carries some TM wave exactly when .

  5. (A) , which is above , so it propagates. TM through TM all propagate. (C) , which is above , so it propagates. TM through TM propagate.

  6. (B) and (D) are both below . No TM mode propagates at these frequencies: all of them are evanescent.

  7. So the frequencies at which TM waves propagate are (A) and (C).

  8. About the official key: the organising institute awarded marks to all candidates for this question and published no reason. One reading changes the answer. Some texts label the TEM mode as "TM", with . If TM is counted as a TM wave, every option propagates. Under the usual definition of a TM wave (), only (A) and (C) propagate.

KEY IDEA

Between parallel plates, the TM cut-off is . The mode has , which makes it TEM, so the lowest true TM mode is TM with . A TM wave propagates only at frequencies above that cut-off.

WATCH OUT FOR

Leaving the separation in the wrong unit. Taking instead of gives , which wrongly adds (D). Two other errors: using instead of , or counting the TEM () mode as a TM wave and ticking all four options.
