Answer and solution

ANSWER

The cut-off frequency of the dominant mode is .

Official answer: 20.50 to 21.50Source: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. For a rectangular waveguide with , the dominant mode is . Its cut-off depends only on the broad dimension: , where for air (, ).

  2. Take the broad wall . The narrow wall plays no part in .

  3. Convert to SI units with : .

  4. Cut-off wavelength: .

  5. Check: the next modes are and , both cut off at (here ). has the lowest cut-off, so it is indeed the dominant mode. Answer: .

KEY IDEA

For in an air-filled rectangular guide, . With , this becomes , which depends only on the broad dimension . The whole problem comes down to converting from inches to metres correctly.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the narrow dimension inch, or writing without the factor 2. Both give about , which is the / cut-off, not . Another slip is forgetting to convert inches to metres, which is off by a factor of about 39. (Taking gives , which is still inside the key range.)
