Figure description

Each option is a two-port with a top (signal) wire and a bottom (return) wire, input terminals on the left and output terminals on the right. (A) Top wire: series inductor L Δ z followed by series resistor R Δ z. Shunt branches: a capacitor C Δ z/2 across the input side (before the inductor) and a resistor (conductance) G Δ z/2 across the output side (after the resistor). There is no shunt G at the input and no shunt C at the output. (B) Shunt conductance G Δ z and shunt capacitor C Δ z in parallel across the input terminals, then series inductor L Δ z and series resistor R Δ z on the top wire to the output (L-section). (C) Shunt G Δ z/2 and C Δ z/2 in parallel across the input, series L Δ z and R Δ z on the top wire, then shunt G Δ z/2 and C Δ z/2 in parallel across the output (pi-section). (D) Top wire: series R Δ z/2, series L Δ z/2, then at the midpoint a shunt G Δ z in parallel with C Δ z to the bottom wire, then series L Δ z/2 and series R Δ z/2 to the output (T-section).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(B), (C) and (D). Each one carries the full series impedance and the full shunt admittance , as an L-, - and T-section respectively. Circuit (A) has only half the shunt admittance, .

Official answer: B, C, DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)

  1. A section of length must carry the full per-unit-length parameters: a total series impedance of and a total shunt admittance of .

  2. Apply KVL and KCL to any such section, divide by and let . This gives the telegrapher's equations How the elements are split or placed (L-, T- or -section) changes and only by terms of order . After dividing by those terms are of order , so they vanish in the limit. The only thing that matters is that the totals are right.

  3. (A): the series arm is correct (, ), but the only shunt elements are one and one . The total shunt admittance is , half the required value. It would give , which is wrong. Not valid.

  4. (B): shunt , then series and . The totals are and . This is the standard L-section. Valid.

  5. (C): series and , with at each end. The total shunt admittance is . This is a symmetric -section. Valid.

  6. (D): series on each side, giving a total of , with in the middle. This is a symmetric T-section. Valid.

  7. The correct options are (B), (C) and (D).

KEY IDEA

A lumped model of a length of line is valid if its series elements add up to and its shunt elements add up to . The layout (L, T or , split or unsplit) only changes terms of order , which disappear when you derive the telegrapher's equations.

WATCH OUT FOR

Accepting (A) because it contains all four symbols , , , and looks like a -section. It has only one and one , so the shunt admittance is halved. The opposite mistake is rejecting (B) because it is not symmetric. An unsymmetric L-section still gives the correct telegrapher's equations in the limit .
