Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A) A purely reactive impedance has for every , so as runs over all real values it traces the whole unit circle centred at , which is the outer boundary of the Smith chart.

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EC (IIT Delhi)

  1. The Smith chart plots the reflection coefficient in the complex -plane, where is the normalised impedance (with a real characteristic impedance ). For the normalised value , with , is still purely imaginary, so the normalised resistance is .

  2. Substitute :

  3. Take the magnitude. The numerator and denominator have equal moduli:

  4. So every purely reactive load gives : total reflection, because a reactance absorbs no power. The locus is the set of points with , a circle of radius 1 centred at the origin, which is the outer boundary of the chart.

  5. The whole circle is covered. (short circuit) gives , gives , gives , and (open circuit) gives . The phase is . As runs from to , runs from to , so sweeps the full range from down to .

  6. Cross-check with the constant- circles: the circle for resistance has centre and radius . Putting gives centre and radius , which is option (A).

KEY IDEA

A pure reactance is lossless, so it reflects all the incident power: . On the Smith chart this is the constant-resistance circle, which has centre and radius . That circle is the chart's outer rim.

WATCH OUT FOR

Option (D) is the circle for : centre , radius , the matching circle that passes through the chart's centre. Candidates who mix up the and circles pick it. Option (C) comes from confusing the locus with the real axis, which is the line of purely resistive loads. Option (B) is the single matched point (), not a locus of reactances.
