Figure description

A dashed rectangle labelled "2 Port Network" at the top holds an ideal transformer drawn as two coupled coils side by side: the left (primary) coil connects to a top-left and a bottom-left terminal (open circles), and the right (secondary) coil connects to a top-right and a bottom-right terminal (open circles). The turns ratio "2:1" (primary: secondary) is printed below the coils inside the dashed box. No polarity dots are drawn. On the left, a dashed bracket with an arrow pointing right into the left terminal pair is labelled "Port 1". On the right, a dashed bracket with an arrow pointing left into the right terminal pair is labelled "Port 2".

Answer and worked solution

ANSWER

for the 2:1 ideal transformer with at both ports. This matches the official key, 0.8.

  1. Transformer relations. For an ideal transformer with , where : and , taking as flowing into port 2. A load on the secondary appears at the primary as .

  2. Set up and . Terminate port 2 in the reference impedance , so no wave enters port 2 (). The impedance seen at port 1 is then .

  3. Reflection coefficient at port 1, using :

  4. Port-1 voltage from the incident wave. The total voltage at port 1 is the incident wave plus the reflected wave: .

  5. Voltage transfer through the transformer. . Port 2 is terminated in , so no wave travels into it () and the whole of is the outgoing wave: . (The drawing has no polarity dots. We take the usual reading, with both windings wound the same way, so is in phase with . Reversing one winding would only flip the sign of . Its magnitude stays the same.)

  6. Definition of . Both ports use the same , so the normalisation cancels:

  7. General formula (check). and . With : .

  8. Lossless check. An ideal transformer absorbs no power, so with port 2 matched we need : . The condition holds, so the result is consistent.

KEY IDEA

Match port 2 with . The transformer then shows port 1 an impedance of , which gives . The transformer steps the total port-1 voltage down by , and that becomes the outgoing wave at the matched port 2, so . The answer depends only on the turns ratio. cancels out, so the given 10 does not change the result.

COMMON MISTAKE

Taking as the plain voltage ratio . That ignores the reflection at port 1: is referred to the INCIDENT wave , not to the total voltage . Another slip is using instead of for the impedance transformation, which gives and wrong values for both and . Checking catches both errors.
