GATE 2025 · ECQ.64 · 2 marks · NAT

A lossless transmission line is terminated with a load of .

If the average incident power on the line is , then the average power delivered to the load (in mW, rounded off to one decimal place) is ________.

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The average power delivered to the load is 6.4 mW.

Official answer: 6.3 to 6.5Source: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EC (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Reflection coefficient at the load, with and :

  2. Power depends only on the magnitude of :

  3. On a lossless line the reflected average power is .

  4. The line absorbs nothing, so power balance gives the power delivered to the load:

  5. Check with the load resistance directly: which gives the same .

KEY IDEA

On a lossless line the load receives the incident power minus the reflected power: . Only matters. Here , so the load takes 64% of the incident power. The phase of does not enter.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using in place of gives , which is wrong because power goes as the square of the voltage reflection coefficient. Other errors: reading the reflected power (3.6 mW) as the answer, or thinking the reactive part takes power. Only the resistive part of absorbs power, and the reactance only sets how much power is reflected.
