GATE 2026 · EEQ.16 · 1 mark · MCQ

A positive point charge with velocity enters a region having electric field and magnetic field . Which one of the following statements is correct for the force on the charge as it enters the region?

  1. (A)

The force will be along the magnetic field but perpendicular to the electric field

  2. (B)

The force will be along the electric field but perpendicular to the magnetic field

  3. (C)

The force will be perpendicular to both electric and magnetic field

  4. (D)

The magnetic field does not exert any force on the charge

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(B) The force will be along the electric field but perpendicular to the magnetic field. The force is : it points along and has no component along .

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Lorentz force on a charge : . The unit vectors used below are the paper's , so , and .

  2. Magnetic part: .

  3. By the cyclic rule , so . This gives .

  4. Total force:

  5. The force points along , the same direction as . Since is along , , so the force is perpendicular to the magnetic field.

  6. Checking the other options: (D) is false, because the magnetic force is not zero ( is perpendicular to ). (A) and (C) are false, because the force has no component and it is parallel to , not perpendicular to it. Answer: (B).

KEY IDEA

The Lorentz force is . The magnetic term is always perpendicular to both and . Here comes out along , the same direction as , so the two forces add and the total force is parallel to and perpendicular to .

WATCH OUT FOR

Getting the cross-product sign wrong. , not . With the minus sign on as well, the result is . If you drop either sign, the magnetic force appears to oppose , but that still leaves the force along the -axis, so the answer is (B) either way. The other trap is picking (C) because the magnetic force alone is perpendicular to and , and then wrongly assuming it must also be perpendicular to .
