Figure from the GATE 2024 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A straight cylindrical wire drawn horizontally. Its left end is shown as a shaded circular cross-section, with an arrow from the centre up to the rim labelled a (the radius). A horizontal line runs through the centre, dashed inside the wire, and is labelled "Axis" on the right. The right end of the wire is drawn as a wavy break line. Inside the wire, below the axis, an arrow points to the right and is labelled I, so the current flows along the axis.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The total current is , which is option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. The current flows along the axis, so is normal to the circular cross-section. The total current is the flux of through that cross-section: .

  2. The integrand depends on alone, so split the disc into thin rings of radius and width . Each ring has area (in cylindrical coordinates, integrated over from to ).

  3. Check the powers: and the area element brings one more , so integrates to . That rules out options (B) and (C), which carry . Option (D) is half the right value. The answer is (A).

KEY IDEA

When the current density varies across the cross-section, the total current is the surface integral , not . For that depends only on , use rings of area , so .

WATCH OUT FOR

Dropping the in the area element gives , which is option (B). Taking the ring area as in place of gives , which is option (D). Multiplying by gives , which is double the right value.
