GATE 2025 · CS1Q.17 · 1 mark · MCQ

is a function from to , is a function from to , and their composition defined as is a mapping from to .

If and are onto (surjective) functions, which ONE of the following is TRUE about the function ?

  1. (A)

must be an onto (surjective) function.

  2. (B)

must be a one-to-one (injective) function.

  3. (C)

must be a bijective function, that is, both one-to-one and onto.

  4. (D)

is not required to be a one-to-one or onto function.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Option (D): is not required to be one-to-one or onto.

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 CS1 (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Given: is onto and is onto. We ask what is forced on .

  2. The condition on is already given, so the only other condition is that is onto. Whether must be onto or one-to-one can be settled with small counterexamples that satisfy both given conditions.

  3. Test whether must be onto. Take , , , with and . Then is onto , and so is onto . But is not in the range of , so is not onto. This rules out (A) and also (C), since a bijective function must be onto.

  4. Test whether must be one-to-one. Take , , , with and . Then is onto , and maps both elements to , so it is onto . But with , so is not one-to-one. This rules out (B).

  5. Both properties can fail while the hypotheses hold, so is not required to be one-to-one or onto. Option (D) is true.

KEY IDEA

Knowing that and are onto says nothing about injectivity or surjectivity of . To refute a "must" claim, one small counterexample that meets all the hypotheses is enough.

WATCH OUT FOR

Thinking that because is onto, must be onto. The true fact is that onto forces to be onto, not . Likewise, one-to-one would force to be one-to-one, but nothing here gives that.
