See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The number of total orders on that contain is .

Official answer: 5Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 CS2 (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. A total order containing is a linear extension of : a listing of in which, for every pair with , comes before . The reflexive pairs impose no condition.

  2. The non-reflexive pairs give three constraints: before , before , and before . The Hasse diagram is a zigzag .

  3. Only and have nothing forced before them, so the first element of the listing is or .

  4. Case first : the remaining elements are . Both and must come after , so comes next. The last two places hold in either order. This gives and , which is 2 orders.

  5. Case first : the remaining elements are and the only constraint left is before , with unconstrained. Of the arrangements of , exactly half, 3, have before : ; ; . This is 3 orders.

  6. Total . Check: the two cases are disjoint and every valid listing starts with or , so no order is missed or counted twice.

KEY IDEA

Total orders containing a partial order are its linear extensions. Count the permutations that respect every non-reflexive pair, splitting by which element can come first.

WATCH OUT FOR

Counting all permutations, or forgetting that a total order must keep 's pairs in the same direction, so must precede both and and must precede . Another slip is to treat the reflexive pairs as constraints, or to miss that is free once is placed.
