Consider the first-order logic sentence , where is a quantifier-free first-order logic formula using only predicate symbols, and possibly equality, but no function symbols. Suppose has a model with a universe containing 7 elements. Which one of the following statements is necessarily true?

  1. (A)

There exists at least one model of with universe of size less than or equal to 3.

  2. (B)

There exists no model of with universe of size less than or equal to 3.

  3. (C)

There exists no model of with universe of size greater than 7.

  4. (D)

Every model of has a universe of size equal to 7.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Option (A): has at least one model with a universe of at most 3 elements.

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 CS (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Let be the given model with 7 elements. Since , there are witnesses (not necessarily distinct) such that holds in .

  2. Let . It is non-empty and has at most 3 elements.

  3. There are no function symbols, so restricting every predicate (and equality) to gives a valid sub-structure with universe . No function needs to be closed.

  4. is quantifier-free, so for any its truth value is the same in as in . Every such is also an element of , where holds. Hence .

  5. Taking in gives . So has a model of size at most 3, which is option (A).

  6. The other options are not forced. Take to be . Then is true in every non-empty universe, so it has models of size 1 (against B), of size 8 (against C) and of size other than 7 (against D).

KEY IDEA

A sentence of the form with a quantifier-free matrix and no function symbols is preserved when you shrink the model to the existential witnesses. Universal statements survive passing to a sub-structure, so a model of this sentence always shrinks to one with at most as many elements as there are existential variables, here 3.

WATCH OUT FOR

Thinking the universe must keep all 7 elements, or must be at least as large as the given model. Another slip is to forget that the three witnesses may coincide, which is why the size is at most 3 and not exactly 3.
