  1. (A)

If for all , , then is commutative.

  2. (B)

If for all , , then is commutative. Here, is the identity element of .

  3. (C)

If the order of is , then is commutative.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The true statements are A, B and C. D is false.

Official answer: A, B, CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 CS (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. (A) Assume for all . Then . Multiply on the left by and on the right by to get . So is commutative. TRUE.

  2. (B) If for all , every element is its own inverse, so . Then for all . So is commutative. TRUE.

  3. (C) A group of order is . Every element is a power of , so the group is cyclic, and a cyclic group is commutative. TRUE.

  4. (D) Let be a subgroup of a commutative group . For we have , because the operation is the same as in . So every subgroup of a commutative group is commutative. The statement says a subgroup need not be commutative, so it is FALSE.

  5. Correct options: A, B and C.

KEY IDEA

Commutativity comes from cancelling in (A), from giving (B), and from a group of order being cyclic (C). A subgroup inherits commutativity from its parent group, so D fails.

WATCH OUT FOR

Calling D true by confusing it with the converse. A subgroup of a commutative group is always commutative. It is a non-commutative group that can have commutative subgroups.
