is the set of non-negative integers. Let be the set of functions from to itself. For any two functions , we define

for every number in . Which of the following is/are CORRECT about the mathematical structure ?

  1. (A)

    is an Abelian group.

  2. (B)

    is an Abelian monoid.

  3. (C)

    is a non-Abelian group.

  4. (D)

    is a non-Abelian monoid.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Only (B) is correct: is an Abelian monoid, but not a group.

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 CS1 (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Closure: for , the value is a sum of two non-negative integers, hence a non-negative integer, so .

  2. Associativity: for every , because addition of integers is associative.

  3. Identity: the zero function lies in and . So is a monoid.

  4. Commutativity: for every , so and the monoid is Abelian. This rules out (C) and (D), which both call the structure non-Abelian.

  5. Inverses: an inverse of would be a function with for all , i.e. . Since must be non-negative, this is possible only when for every .

  6. Take for all . Then , so has no inverse in and is not a group. This rules out (A).

  7. So is an Abelian monoid that is not a group, and only (B) is correct.

KEY IDEA

Pointwise addition of functions from the non-negative integers to themselves is closed, associative, commutative and has the zero function as identity. Inverses would need negative values, so it is a commutative monoid and not a group.

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating as an Abelian group because addition of integers has inverses. The inverse is not a non-negative integer, so it lies outside for any non-zero .
