A 3-bit DAC is implemented using ideal opamp and switches as shown in the figure. Each of the switches gets closed when its corresponding digital input is at logic 1. For a digital input of 110, the resistance seen from the reference source and the current , are

Figure from the GATE 2025 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Binary-weighted-resistor DAC with an inverting op-amp summer. A 6 V reference voltage source (+ terminal up, − terminal to GND) drives a vertical bus; an arrow labelled R_in points into the bus from the source side. Three single-pole switches (dashed boxes), each on its own branch, have one terminal on this bus. Top branch: switch controlled by D_0 (LSB) in series with 12 kΩ. Middle branch: switch controlled by D_1 in series with 6 kΩ. Bottom branch: switch controlled by D_2 (MSB) in series with 3 kΩ. The far ends of the three resistors join on a second vertical bus. That bus goes to the inverting (−) input of the op-amp. From the top node of the bus, a current I (arrow pointing right) flows through a 10 kΩ feedback resistor to the op-amp output. The non-inverting (+) input is connected to GND. An open switch leaves its resistor disconnected (floating); it is not switched to ground.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

and , option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 IN (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Decode the input : the switch (3 k) and the switch (6 k) close, and the switch (12 k) stays open.

  2. Virtual ground: the + input is grounded and the ideal op-amp has negative feedback through the 10 k resistor, so the − input sits at . The right-hand ends of all three resistors are therefore at .

  3. An open switch leaves its branch floating, so the 12 k branch carries no current and plays no part. In this circuit it is not switched to ground.

  4. The source therefore sees only the two closed branches in parallel, each running from to virtual ground:

  5. Branch currents by Ohm's law: and .

  6. KCL at the inverting node: an ideal op-amp input draws no current, so the whole branch current goes through the 10 k feedback resistor:

  7. (Not needed for the answer: an ideal op-amp output would be .) So and , which is option (A).

KEY IDEA

In a binary-weighted-resistor DAC, the op-amp's inverting input is a virtual ground. Each closed branch therefore runs from to and draws on its own. The reference source sees the closed branches in parallel, and their currents add in the feedback resistor, so .

WATCH OUT FOR

There are three common mistakes. (1) Reading the bits in the wrong order, as if , , . That closes the 12 k and 6 k branches and gives 4 k and 1.5 mA, which is not an option. (2) Taking as the current in the top 12 k branch only, because the arrow is drawn at that node. This leads towards option (B), yet that branch is open and carries nothing. is the total current into the summing node. (3) Treating the op-amp input as an open circuit, which gives (options C and D). The inverting input draws no current, but it is held at 0 V, so each closed branch still draws current from the source.
