Figure from the GATE 2022 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two 2×1 multiplexers connected in cascade. First (left) MUX: input I_0 = 1, input I_1 = 0, select line S_0 = B; its output Y goes to the I_1 input of the second MUX. Second (right) MUX: input I_0 = 1, input I_1 = output Y of the first MUX, select line S_0 = A; its output Y is F.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

F = (a NAND of A and B), so options (A) and (B) are correct.

Official answer: A, BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. 2×1 MUX rule: , where denotes complement (the select line picks when and when ).

  2. First MUX (, , ): .

  3. Second MUX (, , ): .

  4. Absorption theorem , with (so ) and : .

  5. De Morgan's theorem: , so F is the NAND of A and B. Truth-table check: ; ; . Only gives 0, which is NAND.

  6. Checking the options: (A) and (B) are both F. (C) and (D) are both NOR, which is wrong: at , F is but NOR gives . Correct options: A and B.

KEY IDEA

Work each 2×1 MUX with . The first MUX, with inputs 1 and 0 and select B, is just an inverter: . The second gives , which is NAND. This is an MSQ, so both equivalent forms of NAND (the De Morgan pair) must be marked.

WATCH OUT FOR

Marking only one of (A) and (B) and forgetting that De Morgan makes them the same function, or mixing up (NAND) with (NOR) and picking (C) or (D). Another slip is wiring the first MUX output into of the second MUX instead of , which gives a different function.
