Consider the state-space representation of a system

ANSWER
(B). Its determinant is , so its characteristic equation is , which gives poles at and .
Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)
Poles are the eigenvalues of . They are the roots of the characteristic equation . For a matrix this is .
Condition for a pole at the origin. Put in : you get . For a matrix , so the condition is . In other words, must be singular. (Equivalently, the product of the eigenvalues equals , so one eigenvalue is zero exactly when .)
(A) . The characteristic equation is , so the poles are and . No pole at the origin.
(B) . This matrix is singular.
(C) . No pole at the origin.
(D) . The characteristic equation is , so the poles are and . No pole at the origin.
Check (B). and , so . The poles are and , so one pole is at the origin. The answer is (B).
KEY IDEA
The poles of are the eigenvalues of . The product of the eigenvalues equals , so the system has a pole at the origin exactly when . You only need to find the one singular matrix, and you never have to solve a quadratic.
WATCH OUT FOR
One mistake is picking (A) or (D) because they have a zero on the diagonal. A zero entry says nothing about the eigenvalues; both of those matrices have . The other is a sign slip in (B): , not . With that slip you get and throw away the correct option.
