ANSWER
.
Official answer: -0.13 to -0.11Source: Official answer key, GATE 2020 IN (IIT Delhi)
Write the system as with and . There is no input, so we want the zero-input (free) response.
Take the Laplace transform of : , so , where .
Find the resolvent matrix. The determinant is , so
Because , only the second column of the resolvent matters: and .
Split into partial fractions using residues. At : . At : . So .
Take the inverse Laplace transform: . Checks: , which is correct. Also gives , and differentiating it gives , which agrees with the first state equation.
Put in :
Rounded to two decimal places, .
KEY IDEA
With no input, the state response is , or equivalently . Since , is just the second column of the state-transition matrix . The eigenvalues and (the roots of ) tell you in advance which exponentials will appear.
WATCH OUT FOR
The common mistakes are these: picking the first column of instead of the second, which gives and ; getting a sign wrong in the adjugate (the off-diagonal entries must become and ); and reporting when the question asks for . Also note that comes out negative even though . The fast term dies away before the slower term does, so the answer really is negative. Do not drop the sign.
