GATE 2022 · EEQ.11 · 1 mark · MCQ

The transfer function of a real system, , is given as:

where and are positive constants. This system cannot operate as

  1. (A)

    low pass filter.

  2. (B)

    high pass filter.

  3. (C)

    band pass filter.

  4. (D)

    an integrator.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(B) — cannot be a high-pass filter, because as for every choice of positive constants. The official key also accepts (D).

Official answer: B or DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Stability. The denominator has and . For a second-order polynomial, positive coefficients put both roots in the left half-plane, so is stable and its frequency response is meaningful.

  2. Low frequency. , which is finite and non-zero because .

  3. High frequency. The numerator has degree 1 and the denominator degree 2, so as (for large enough it falls off as ).

  4. High-pass is impossible. A high-pass filter must pass high frequencies: has to approach a non-zero value as . Here for every choice of positive , so this system cannot be a high-pass filter. That is option (B).

  5. Low-pass is possible. Example: , , , gives at , at and at .

  6. Band-pass is possible. Example: , , , gives at , at and at .

  7. About (D). An ideal integrator is , with a pole at . has no pole at the origin, because keeps the constant term of the denominator non-zero, so it is never an ideal integrator. It can behave like one — magnitude falling at 20 dB per decade with phase near — over a limited band of frequencies, but not at all frequencies.

  8. The answer is (B). The official key accepts both (B) and (D).

KEY IDEA

A strictly proper transfer function (numerator degree lower than the denominator's) always rolls off to zero at high frequency, so it can never pass high frequencies.

WATCH OUT FOR

Thinking the zero at lets high frequencies through. One zero offsets only one pole's roll-off; with two poles the magnitude still falls at 20 dB per decade as .
