Let be a white Gaussian noise with power spectral density W/Hz. If is input to an LTI system with impulse response . The average power of the system output is ______ W (rounded off to two decimal places).
GATE 2023 EC Q.59: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
The average output power is .
Official answer: 0.24 to 0.26Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)
The input is white noise with two-sided power spectral density , flat for all .
The output PSD is .
The impulse response has frequency response , so .
The output power is
By Parseval's theorem,
Therefore .
Check with the autocorrelation: , so . Direct integration agrees: .
KEY IDEA
For white noise of two-sided PSD through an LTI system, output power is (Parseval). You need no frequency-domain integral.
WATCH OUT FOR
Treating W/Hz as one-sided, or using in place of . That doubles the answer to 0.5. Another slip is integrating over only.
