GATE 2025 EC Q.28: solution and answer

GATE 2025 · ECQ.28 · 1 mark · MSQ

Consider a message signal which is bandlimited to , where is in Hz. Consider the following two modulation schemes for the message signal:
- Double sideband-suppressed carrier (DSB-SC):
- Amplitude modulation (AM):
Here, and are the amplitude and frequency (in Hz) of the carrier, respectively. In the case of AM, denotes the modulation index.
Consider the following statements:
(i) An envelope detector can be used for demodulation in the DSB-SC scheme if for all .
(ii) An envelope detector can be used for demodulation in the AM scheme only if for all .
Which of the following options is/are correct?

  1. (A)

    (i) is TRUE

  2. (B)

    (i) is FALSE

  3. (C)

    (ii) is TRUE

  4. (D)

    (ii) is FALSE

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Options (A) and (D): statement (i) is true and statement (ii) is false.

Official answer: A, DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EC (IIT Roorkee)

  1. An envelope detector (with ) outputs the magnitude of the slowly varying amplitude factor: for the output is .

  2. DSB-SC: , so the output is . If for all , then , so the output is and the message is recovered. Statement (i) is TRUE, so (A) is correct and (B) is wrong.

  3. AM: , so the output is . This equals , which is the message plus a DC term, exactly when for all . That is the no-overmodulation condition for a message with negative values.

  4. This condition does not need . Take and . Then , so the envelope detector works, although is negative for part of each cycle.

  5. So the claim that an envelope detector works in AM only if for all is not necessary. Statement (ii) is FALSE, so (D) is correct and (C) is wrong.

  6. Correct options: (A) and (D).

KEY IDEA

An envelope detector returns |a(t)|, the magnitude of the amplitude factor of the carrier. It recovers the message whenever that amplitude factor never changes sign. For DSB-SC this means m(t) must stay positive. For AM it means 1 + μ m(t) must stay non-negative, which allows a message with negative values.

WATCH OUT FOR

Believing an envelope detector needs a positive message in AM as well. What it needs there is 1 + μ m(t) ≥ 0, that is no overmodulation. The message itself may go negative.
