Answer and solution

ANSWER

Official answer: 2.49 to 2.51Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Write the carrier term as , so the carrier frequency is . Its power across is , so .

  2. The other two terms have frequencies and . These are the lower and upper sidebands at , each of amplitude .

  3. A cosine of amplitude across has power . The total sideband power is .

  4. The total power is .

  5. The given ratio is .

  6. Cross-multiplying gives , so and .

  7. Hence , taking the positive root as an amplitude. Check: and , so .

KEY IDEA

For an AM wave, read the carrier amplitude and the two sideband amplitudes directly from the three cosine terms. Across each cosine of amplitude carries power , and the total power is the sum of the carrier and sideband powers, since the three frequencies are distinct.

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking the ratio as sideband power to carrier power, which gives and . Another slip is counting only one sideband, which gives and . The question asks for the total sideband power (both sidebands) relative to the total power, which includes the carrier.
