Figure from the GATE 2018 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A source v_s = 1 V drives a node; the current I flows from the source into that node (arrow pointing right). From this node, a 10.0 k Ω resistor goes to the inverting (−) input of op-amp 1, and a 10.1 k Ω resistor runs along the top of the drawing to the output of op-amp 2. Op-amp 1: non-inverting (+) input grounded, 20.0 k Ω feedback resistor from its output to its inverting input. The output of op-amp 1 feeds a 20.0 k Ω resistor into the inverting (−) input of op-amp 2. Op-amp 2: non-inverting (+) input grounded, 20.0 k Ω feedback resistor from its output to its inverting input. The output of op-amp 2 is also the right-hand end of the 10.1 k Ω resistor that goes back to the source node.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(exactly ).

Official answer: 0.98 to 1.00Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Assume ideal op-amps (infinite gain, infinite input resistance, zero output resistance). Each op-amp has negative feedback through its resistor and its (+) input is grounded, so by the virtual short both inverting inputs sit at . The source node is held at by the ideal source, so the path does not feed anything back into the amplifiers.

  2. Op-amp 1 is an inverting amplifier: .

  3. Op-amp 2 is an inverting amplifier with gain : . Its output resistance is zero, so the resistor connected to it does not change this value.

  4. Current from the source node through the resistor into the virtual ground: .

  5. Current from the source node through the resistor towards the output of op-amp 2: . The minus sign means this current actually flows from the op-amp 2 output into the source node.

  6. KCL at the source node (the source must supply whatever leaves the node):

  7. To two decimal places, .

KEY IDEA

The two cascaded inverting stages give a net gain of , so the right end of the resistor sits at . That resistor returns almost all of the current that the resistor draws into the virtual ground, and the source supplies only the small difference . The circuit makes the source see a very large input resistance of about , and this is the principle behind bootstrapping and negative-impedance input stages.

WATCH OUT FOR

Stopping at (only the branch), or taking by forgetting that the second inverting stage flips the sign again. The second error gives . Another slip is rounding to too early. The answer is a small difference of two nearly equal currents, so keep at least five significant figures until the final subtraction.
