What is actually in the GATE previous-year papers we host — including which years carry the official answer key

Any GATE year — checked against the GATE 2027 Information Brochure

We host six question-paper sets — CS/IT, EC, EE, IN, DA, BT. Eighteen of the fifty files carry the organising institute's own answer key, one year is missing, there is no Civil set, and five of the seven 2027 syllabi changed.

IAE Academy

Resource Centre

IAE Academy hosts six sets of GATE previous-year question papers: Computer Science and Information Technology, Electronics and Communication, Electrical, Instrumentation, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and Biotechnology. There is no Civil Engineering set on this site. If you are preparing for CE, it is better to know that now than after twenty minutes of looking. Every file in all six sets is the organising institute's question paper exactly as it was released, free and un-gated — each row opens the paper in Google Drive.

These are question papers. Eighteen of them also carry the official key.

Until 15 September 2026 the six pages described the papers as “fully solved”, with answer keys and worked explanations. That was wrong. The correction that replaced it — “question papers only, no answer keys” — was also wrong, because it came from a sample. On 18 September 2026 we parsed all fifty hosted files: eighteen carry the organising institute's own answer key, appended after the last question, giving the accepted answer for all 65 questions. None of the fifty carries a worked solution or an explanation. Nothing was ever withdrawn in either correction — the same years are still there. For GATE 2027 itself, the brochure says the answer keys will be displayed on the official website after the examinations conclude, and that candidates may contest them during a specified window on payment of a fee.

A file counts as carrying the key when its text holds a complete 65-row table of question number, type, section and accepted answer. Eight files are scans rather than digital text, so their contents cannot be searched either way and are listed separately.

What an old paper still drills

The shape of the examination is fixed for 2027 and printed in the brochure's pattern table. Every test paper runs three hours and carries 65 questions for 100 marks, of which General Aptitude is 10 questions and 15 marks. In BT, CE, CS, EC, EE and IN the remaining 85 marks are the subject component, of which Engineering Mathematics carries 13 marks; in DA the whole 85 is the subject component, with no separately stated Engineering Mathematics allocation. Questions come in three types — MCQ, MSQ and NAT — and each carries either 1 or 2 marks. A wrong MCQ costs 1/3 of a mark on a 1-mark question and 2/3 of a mark on a 2-mark question. MSQ and NAT carry no negative marking, and there is no partial marking for any question. That is the scheme you will be marked under, whichever year's paper is in front of you, which is why a 2019 paper is still worth three hours of your time. Read the instruction page of each older paper, since it states that year's own scheme, but mark yourself by the 2027 rules, because those are the ones that will apply to you.

Sitting a practice paper the way the real one runs

  • Three hours — a maximum of four for candidates availing compensatory time — and no leaving early. Candidates are not permitted to leave the examination hall before the scheduled end, so plan to spend the whole slot rather than to finish it.
  • Only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator. Your own calculator is prohibited in the hall, as are mobile phones, analog, digital and smart watches, and books, papers and loose sheets.
  • Rough work goes on a scribble pad provided in the hall. You may hold only one at a time — the first must go back to the invigilator before you are given a second — and every pad must be returned before you leave.
  • Login closes 15 minutes after the scheduled start. There is no arriving late and making the time up.

Two answer-entry habits worth building on old papers

NAT answers are keyed in with a virtual numeric keypad on the screen, and the computer keyboard is disabled. The question itself states how many decimal places the answer must carry, and the brochure advises rounding off only at the end of the calculation rather than at intermediate stages — worth rehearsing, because rounding early changes the number you end up typing. MSQ is the other habit: one or more of the four options may be correct, a partially correct combination earns nothing at all, and a wrong answer costs nothing. Old papers are the cheapest place to learn how you personally behave under both rules.

Where an older paper can mislead you

IAE Academy compared the official 2026 and 2027 syllabus PDFs for all seven papers it teaches, and five of them changed. Among the branches with a paper set here, Instrumentation changed in all ten of its sections, Electronics in six of eight, and Computer Science in three of ten, while the Biotechnology syllabus carries one section fewer in 2027. Electrical and Data Science and AI have no listing change at all. Where a paper did change, an old question on a topic the 2027 syllabus does not name may no longer be representative of what you will be asked — the Computer Science networks section, for instance, no longer names UDP, SMTP and FTP. “Not listed by name” is the careful phrase and also the accurate one: it means the 2026 wording is absent from the 2027 PDF, not that the topic is out of scope, and a shorter syllabus line is not a promise that nothing under it can be asked. The gap runs the other way too. Anything the 2027 syllabus names for the first time has little or no coverage in any past paper, and no amount of solving will supply it. The section-by-section comparisons are at /resources/gate-2027-syllabus-changes, with a page of its own for CS, EC, IN, BT and CE.

What that means for each set

Work backwards from 2026, because the most recent paper is the closest thing to the one you will sit, and it is the one written against the syllabus nearest yours. For CS, 2024, 2025 and 2026 each have two papers here, one for each of the two slots; the brochure notes that some test papers may be conducted in multiple sessions and that a normalisation is applied across them, so treat a year's two slots as two readings of the same year rather than a first and second choice. For DA there are only three papers in existence, so ration them: sit one now and hold the others back for later in your preparation. For EE the set is eight sittings rather than nine, since 2019 is not in it. Whichever set you are working through, take every question that felt unfamiliar and check its topic against the official 2027 syllabus PDF at /resources/gate-2027-syllabus before you decide it is worth revising.

If your set runs out

Three readers will reach the end of what is here: anyone preparing for Civil, anyone who wants the missing EE 2019 paper, and anyone who has worked through 2018 and wants to go further back. The brochure points at the official route for all three. Question papers from previous GATE exams, 2007 to 2026, can be downloaded from the Downloads tab of the GATE 2027 website. The brochure separately notes that the syllabus for the test papers, previous years’ question papers and mock examination links, together with the virtual scientific calculator, are accessible through the official website. What this site adds is convenience, not exclusivity: six branches, gathered in one place, in the form the organising institutes released them.

Worked, not official

The brochure fixes three hours and 65 questions. Spread evenly, that is about two minutes and 46 seconds per question. That figure is IAE Academy's own arithmetic from the brochure's duration and question count — GATE does not publish it and does not set it as a target — and an even split is only a reference point in any case, because a 2-mark question is worth two 1-mark ones and the brochure sets no per-question time.

Common questions

Do the GATE previous-year papers on IAE Academy include answer keys or solutions?+
Eighteen of the fifty files do. The 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023 CS papers; 2018, 2020 and 2022 for EC, EE and IN; and 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2024 for BT each carry the organising institute's own answer key, giving the accepted answer for all 65 questions. No DA paper carries one. No file on this site contains a worked solution or an explanation. The pages described them as “fully solved” until 15 September 2026, and then as having no keys at all until 18 September; both descriptions were wrong and both corrections are published.
Which branches and years do the previous-year paper sets cover?+
Six papers. CS/IT, EC, IN and BT cover 2018 to 2026, and CS/IT carries both slots for 2024, 2025 and 2026. EE covers 2018 to 2026 except 2019, so eight papers. DA covers 2024 to 2026, every year since that paper began.
Is there a GATE Civil (CE) previous-year paper set on this site?+
No. Civil is the one paper IAE Academy teaches with no hosted question-paper set. The GATE 2027 brochure says question papers from previous GATE exams, 2007 to 2026, can be downloaded from the Downloads tab of the GATE 2027 website.
Are older GATE papers still useful now that the 2027 syllabus has changed?+
For the most part, yes. The 2027 shape is fixed and printed in the brochure: three hours, 65 questions, 100 marks, MCQ, MSQ and NAT questions of 1 or 2 marks, 1/3 and 2/3 negative marking on wrong MCQs, and no partial marking — so mark an old paper by those rules, after reading its own instruction page for the scheme that applied in its year. What an old paper cannot tell you is where the syllabus moved, so check any unfamiliar topic against the 2027 syllabus.
Which of these papers changed for GATE 2027?+
Among the six with a set here, Instrumentation changed in all ten of its sections, Electronics in six of eight, Computer Science in three of ten, and the Biotechnology syllabus carries one section fewer. Electrical and Data Science and AI have no listing change. Civil changed as well, gaining an eighth section, but has no paper set here.
How much time does each GATE question get?+
The brochure fixes three hours and 65 questions, which works out at roughly two minutes and 46 seconds a question if the time were spread evenly. That is IAE Academy's arithmetic rather than an official figure or a published target, and an even split is only a reference point: a 2-mark question is worth two 1-mark ones, and the brochure sets no per-question time.
